AT ISSUE: Ball State students should follow student firefighters' example, donate time to assisting others

Ball State University students usually think of time as a commodity that is in short supply. Classes, homework and some semblance of a social life take up most of a typical day. Finding time to help others is a worthy cause that can slip under the radar with everything else going on in students' lives.

At least eight brave Ball State students, however, find the extra time to help others by being volunteer firefighters. All students should follow suit by proactively searching out ways to help others whenever they can.

Volunteering for a fire department won't work for every student. It's a hard, specialized job that involves rigorous training, dedication and a strong desire to help others in the face of grave danger. If risking life to fight fires isn't up your alley, there are plenty of other opportunities available to students.

Some options, including giving blood and plasma, take very little time and effort but can help others immensely. Currently, Indiana is trying to solve the biggest blood shortage in the last seven years, according to the Indiana Blood Center. Students don't have to go far to help this cause - Ball State is holding an Angels For Life Blood Drive today in Pruis Hall.

If donating bodily fluids doesn't sit well, there are other options at Ball State as well. Students can join the more than 2,000 students who volunteer time for Student Voluntary Services, which helps students find opportunities to donate time to various community efforts. If students are lucky, they might even be eligible for scholarships as a result of volunteering for SVS.

What students get from volunteering isn't as important as the help it gives others. If eight Ball State students can afford to donate their time - and risk their lives - to help others, it shouldn't be hard for everyone else to find some time to volunteer.
