Students organize fashion fundraiser

Show to raise money to help five-year-old Leukemia patient

Six months ago, Emma Belcas was a happy and vibrant four-year-old girl who loved to play dress-up. But Emma and her family were twisted upside down when she was diagnosed with Acute Lymphoblastic Leukemia.

Now five years old, Emma is not out playing in the sand, swinging or running through the park. She is currently in treatment to fight the battle against Leukemia.

Emma's story has brought five Ball State students together in an effort to help her by organizing the Struttin' for the Cure Fashion Show at 7 p.m. today in Cardinal Hall in the Student Center.

"We all live in Elliot, which is why Elliot's sponsoring the fashion show," sophomore Amanda Borchers said.

The idea for the fashion show started with Beth Distell, who thought it would be fun to get people together, Borchers said. Distell turned to Borchers, a fashion major, for help with the project.

"Eventually we thought it would be good to help someone by doing this," Distell said, "and I started looking for people that needed help."

The search ended with the help of a sorority sister who knew Emma's mother, she said.

The clothing for the fashion show is being provided by DOTS and Fashionista, Distell said.

Borchers said there will be a $2 admittance fee at the door, and they will also be collecting donations.

"We all really got behind Beth's idea and really supported it," Borchers said.

Emma, who is currently seeking treatment at Riley's, will be at the fashion show tonight, organizers said. Distell encouraged people to come out to watch the show and donate to help Emma.
