MEN'S VOLLEYBALL: Setter named MIVA player of the week

Setter Ethan Pheister was named the Midwestern Intercollegiate Volleyball Association Player of the Week Tuesday.

Starting at setter for the first time since Jan. 13, Pheister had a career-high 47 assists as the No. 13 Ball State University men's volleyball team defeated No. 6 The Ohio State University Friday.

"To come into that kind of match and to be relaxed, find his composure and be able to go and set a good match shows a lot about what kind of player and competitor Ethan is," Cardinals coach Joel Walton said.

Saturday, Pheister had 39 assists and three blocks against Rutgers-Newark University.

Prior to the weekend, Pheister came off the bench to replace setter Jeff Schmitz after game two against Lewis University Wednesday. Pheister had 40 assists as the Cardinals (17-11, 8-4 MIVA) beat the Flyers in five games to clinch home-court advantage in the first-round of the MIVA Tournament.

"Ethan did a really nice job in our three matches and helped change the momentum," Walton said. "With him out on the court it seemed like things were picking up offensively."

Pheister started the season's first three matches before Schmitz became the team's starting setter. During the season, Pheister came off the bench to play in 12 matches.
