MEN'S GOLF: Ball State ready for Marshall Invitational

After placing second last year, Cardinals look to repeat success

One week ago the University Programming Board showed the movie "We are Marshall" in Pruis Hall. Today the Ball State University men's golf team will travel to Huntington, W. Va., where Marshall University lost thirty-seven members of its football team in a 1970 plane crash. The 38th Annual Marshall Invitational will begin at 8:30 a.m. at the Guyan Golf Club. Set up at 6,476 yards and a par of 71, the 54-hole tournament will consist of 16 teams.

In addition to the Marshall Thundering Herd, seven Mid-American Conference schools will be competing, including the University of Akron, Bowling Green State University, Eastern Michigan University, Miami University, Northern Illinois University and Ohio University. Because the Cardinals will be playing in the region and against familiar schools, coach Mike Fleck said the tournament is a little different than the past two they have competed in.

"We are back in the Midwest and seeing some schools we will be playing again in the MAC championships," Fleck said.

For seniors Wayne Denger and C.D. Hockersmith, this will be their fourth time competing in Huntington. With experience and the productivity Andy Skillman showed last year at Marshall, Fleck is wanting to see some low round scores.

"I am expecting Wayne and C.D. to put up some productive numbers," Fleck said. "From a team standpoint I'm not really sure what the expectations are. I just want to see some good scores be put up."

In 2006 the Cardinals placed second with a score of 878, falling 10 strokes behind winner Eastern Michigan. Preparing to do just as well, the Cardinals have been showing excellent results during practice at the Player's Club and the Delaware Country Club.

"We had a great day of qualifying with great scores. On Saturday we had a really good day and I could tell the focus was there," Fleck said. "Five of the 10 guys were under par in the morning and eight were under par in the afternoon."

Ben Lakoff, Brian Maurer and Skillman will join Denger and Hockersmith as the five-man squad for Ball State. Ross Cosat will be competing individually. Thirty-six holes will be played today, with the final 18 holes on Saturday.

"We will find out in the next two days where the guys are mentally," Fleck said.
