The Blue Loop shuttle bus route was even more successful this year than last year, said Sue Weller, director of Facilities Business Services and Transportation.
Originally the Blue Loop was set to end on March 2, but Weller extended the duration until today. The east-of-campus route ran until Spring Break last year, and the route needed to be the same this year so her office could compare the number of riders, Weller said.
The Blue Loop buses transported about 51 riders an hour this year, compared to 44 riders an hour last year, Weller said.
After the route ends Friday, Weller will calculate the total number of riders during the duration of the route, she said.
Student Government Association President Asher Lisec said everybody she spoke to about the Blue Loop was satisfied and would like to see SGA continue the Blue Loop in the future.
Lisec said she has a meeting on April 6 with Tom Morrison, associate vice-president for Human Resources and State Relations and administrator in charge of on-campus transportation, to discuss the possibility of continuing the Blue Loop next semester.
Weller said her office will evaluate the Blue Loop route during the summer.
Junior Joel O'Brien said he hopes the Blue Loop continues next year. Students who live in the Village are given the option to walk to class or to a shuttle stop, he said. But before the Blue Loop, he and other student son (?) the east side of campus didn't have that option, O'Brien said. A problem occurred after the blizzard a couple weeks ago, O'Brien said. The sidewalks were covered, and he had to walk in the middle of New York Avenue.
"If it hadn't been for the Blue Loop, I probably would've missed a lot of classes," O'Brien said.
Weller said SGA helped a lot with advertisements for the Blue Loop. She appreciates the students who took advantage of the Blue Loop.
The Blue Loop has probably kept many cars off the campus, which provides a cleaner campus without a lot of vehicle exhaust, Weller said. Fewer commuters also helps provide more parking spaces.
Lisec and Weller said they aren't sure whether the Blue Loop will return. O'Brien doesn't understand why the loop wouldn't be extended.
"It's not like they don't have enough busses or drivers," he said.
