Delaware County's blizzard warning is expected to continue until midnight tonight, Logan Johnson of the Indianapolis branch of the National Weather Service said.
As the temperature warms up around mid-afternoon, the snow might become rain or freezing rain, but as temperatures drop at night, it will become snow again, he said.
The Muncie area has reported about 11 inches of snowfall with drifts up to three or four feet, Johnson said. There are frequent wind gusts more than 40 mph and visibility is less than a quarter mile.
"Unless it is an emergency, we definitely do not think people should be on the roads today," Johnson said. "Some roads may be impassable due to drifts. Only drive if it is absolutely necessary."
If it is necessary to drive today, Johnson said to bring a winter survival kit with warm clothing, a shovel and other items to help if the vehicle becomes stuck.
"If you get stuck, stay with your car," he said. "Don't go walking away. It is easy the low visibility can get disorienting and make it easy to get lost. It's hard to tell which direction you're walking."
Weather conditions in Indianapolis are less severe than northern Indiana, Johnson said. North of Lafayette was hit hardest with reported snow drifts as high as six feet, he said.
