BASEBALL: Kyle Heyne up for Stopper of the Year

Add another preseason accolade to the list for the Ball State University baseball team. Junior Kyle Heyne joins one other Mid-American Conference and 33 additional pitchers as a possibility for the Stopper of the Year Award. The award goes to the top relief pitcher in Division I baseball and is voted on by the National Collegiate Baseball Writers' Association.

During the 2006 season, Heyne played in 42.2 innings and struck out 46 batters and walked five. He had a team-best 2.11 ERA and helped the Cardinals get a spot in the MAC and NCAA Tournaments.

In the MAC, he finished the season second for most saves with 12 and pitched for the Cardinals in the first round of the NCAA regional game when the team beat No. 1-seeded Kentucky by a final score of 3-1.

Finalists will be named after the 2007 regular season and the winner will be named by the NCBWA's All-American Committee on June 6.

The award has been named two other times. The first went to J. Brent Cox from Texas, Don Czyz from Kansas.
