After the countless awards Amanda McCormick received during her senior year at Ball State University, she still was taken aback when Collegiate Volleyball Update (CVU.com) named her National Libero of the Year.
"I was really surprised," she said. "There are so many really good liberos. An honor like that is really special. It means a lot."
McCormick was also named to the first team all Mid-American Conference and was named a CVU.com Player of the Week following a school record 50 dig performance against Toledo in September.
She holds MAC and Ball State records in digs per game and scored 1,579 digs in two years in Muncie. She spent her first two seasons at the University of Nebraska and transferred to Ball State before her junior year.
McCormick was a bright spot for Ball State's women's volleyball team this year, recording an NCAA 7.68 digs per game as the Cardinals struggled to win and mustered a 12-18 season. At the end of the season, the entire coaching staff, including coach Randy Litchfield, were let go.
"It is a little bittersweet," McCormick said. "To get something like this with the way the season went and what happened with Randy and Chad [Weyenberg] and Heidi [Zickgraf]. They're the ones who helped me get there. "
McCormick is finishing her senior year at Ball State and coaching an under-18 local club team in Muncie.
"It's going really well, never thought I'd get into coaching," McCormick said. "It's almost as satisfying as playing, if not more so. I get a lot of joy watching the girls get better. It's really great."
McCormick said she plans to move somewhere warm and eventually start a club team of her own after leaving Ball State.
