Late Nite themes planned by students

Only one place on campus exists where a chainsaw juggler, a magician and a student mentalist can be found in the same building on the same night. That's right, it's a new semester, and Late Nite is back in full swing debuting with a circus theme Saturday night.

The self-proclaimed "best party on campus" will also feature face painting, balloon animals, free food and spool animals.

An advisory board of students begin planning the Spring Semester calendar of Late Nite events in November, Jessica Inman, senior and Late Nite student director, said.

The advisory board distributes surveys during Late Nite events and brainstorms ideas based on student responses, she said.

The board has planned a total of 14 Late Nite events for the Spring Semester, including the fourth-annual Late Nite Carnival, which is on April 20.

However, the carnival is not the only event to get excited about, Inman said.

Brian Dietz, assistant director for the L.A. Pittenger Student Center, agrees with her.

"[Late Nites] are all exciting but traditionally everyone looks forward to the carnival because it is so big and unique. I don't know many colleges that bring a Ferris wheel to campus."

Many activities are planned to appeal to students of all ages, genders and interests, Inman said.

"Coming up in the next couple of weeks we are going to dedicate some of the big screen TVs here to show some of the NFL playoff games," she said. "We are going to have some things to attract males and some things that will appeal more to females, things that will appeal more to freshmen and things that appeal more to upperclassmen. We usually have 20-25 things going on."

Some of this semester's themes include recess, comedy, multiculturalism and Mardi Gras. All students are welcome to enjoy the night, and if they choose, become a Late Nite volunteer.

"Applications for the advisory board will come out in February," Inman said. "It is a great way to meet a lot of fun and creative people."

Students interested in performing during Late Nite programs can contact the Student Center Programs office in L.A. Pittenger Student Center 20.
