Car crash doesn't stop chairwoman

Christine Shea plans to return to Ball State week after accident

When Christine Shea, Ball State University's Modern Language and Classics chairwoman, comes to campus today, she said she looks forward to shocking students and faculty.

Shea fractured a vertebra when a car hit her and senior Cass Zamora as they drove to Muncie from Indianapolis on Monday night. After spending the past three days at Ball Memorial Hospital, Shea said she is eager to get out and come to campus although she is wearing a medical neck brace.

"I'm planning to pop in up at school and scare the locals," Shea said.

Shea said she fractured her second cervical vertebra. Zamora was not hurt as badly, and said she may have fractured her foot.

Shea and Zamora were returning to Muncie after spending the holiday weekend in Chicago.

"Dr. Shea and I sometimes carpool to Chicago together," Zamora said. "She has a [condominium] in Chicago and I have a boyfriend in Racine, [Wis.]."

On the way back, the two stopped in Indianapolis to see a movie and have dinner with friends, Zemora said.

The accident happened on Highway 32 between Yorktown and Daleville when a driver going the other direction attempted to pass a car in a no-passing zone. Shea said she is glad she and Zamora were not hurt more.

"Considering we were in a head-on collision at 55 mph, I think we did quite well," Shea said.

Shea said she would like to return to work Tuesday. The Department of Modern Language and Classics e-mailed her students so they knew about her absence. This is her first absence for sickness in 17 years, she said.

"My whole time at Ball State I've only missed one class for sickness, and that was only because I vomited on the threshold," she said. "Professors have the greatest job on Earth, why would I miss classes?"
