As part of an effort to work more with Ball State University, the County Commissioner's Office has hired a Ball State graduate student as a part-time intern.
County Commissioner Larry Bledsoe said the commissioners expect more Ball State students or graduates to intern for them in the future.
"I want to use Ball State to our benefit," Bledsoe said. "The students there are the future of our community and so it would be a shame not to get them involved."
Travis Robinson, 23, started his internship with the County Commissioner's Office on Monday.
Bledsoe said the commissioners intend to teach Robinson and other interns how the government works by giving them first hand experience, which is the best kind of way to learn, he said.
When Bledsoe worked as a reserved deputy in Delaware County he saw interns there, so he wants to see more of them in the County Commissioners Office, he said. According to Bledsoe, he is 40 years old and one of the youngest in the office. Something needs to be done about that, he said, and working with Ball State students is the answer.
Robinson will be responsible for various research-related tasks, such as drawing up recommendations for subjects that the commissioner's office can act upon.
County Commissioner Tom Bennington said Robinson will have duties that are detailed-oriented.
Some of these tasks will include conducting research on the department of Environmental Management and the Delaware County Seal.
As a part of "The National Association of Counties," the County Seal project will help people learn more about the history of Delaware County.
Despite the immediate responsibilities, Robinson, who is going for his master's degree in public administration, said he is looking forward to his duties.
"It's going to be interesting to work with people in various departments across the state and county," he said.
Robinson, who took this job because of his interest in local government, will work 20 hours a week for the commissioner's office, along with 20 hours a week as a graduate assistant in the Ball State Criminal Justice department.
