Bookmark Cafe opens in library

Students can use meal cards, cash, Dining Plus at new eatery

After a semester delay in opening, the Bookmark Cafe in Bracken Library is ready for customers.

Liz Poore, assistant director of dining, said the caf+â-¬ has a lot to offer students. Cold cereals, fresh fruit cups, yogurt, milk, soy milk, sandwiches, salad and pastries are some of the products available, along with retail items such as stainless steel, ceramic and French press coffee mugs and sampler syrup. The cafe also features "Seattle's Best Coffee," a product of Starbucks, in both regular and decaf. Poore said she is especially pleased that students are able to use their meal cards at Bookmark Caf+â-¬. The cafe also accepts cash, check, Cardinal Cash and Dining Plus.

Sophomore Vella Williams is one of seven students employed at the cafe. She said she chose to apply to work at Bookmark Cafe mainly because of its flexible schedule, but also because of how nice it is.

While stopping in the cafe, junior James Scott said he appreciates that the caf+â-¬ is finally open, and he likes the fact that students are able to work there.

"I've been to other campuses and they've all had cafes in their libraries, so I'm glad Ball State finally got one," Scott said.

Jon Lewis, the director of campus dining, said he is confident the Bookmark Cafe will fit in well at the library.

"We want people to visit. We have good coffee, good pastries and a good environment. It is in a good location and will improve the environment the library can offer," Lewis said. He said putting caf+â-¬s in campus libraries is becoming a national trend, and he is proud to open Bookmark Cafe.

The official grand opening and ribbon cutting will happen sometime in February, but a date has not yet been determined.

The cafe is open Monday through Thursday from 7:00 a.m. to 10 p.m., Friday from 7 a.m. to 2 p.m. and Sunday from 5:00 p.m. to 10:00 p.m. The caf+â-¬ is closed on Saturday.

Not only has Ball State's Dining department added a new business, but it has also changed and simplified its title to avoid confusion. Previously, Residence Halls Dining, University Banquet and Catering and University Food Court are the different names for the parts of the former "Dining Service" department, and they will now all be under the term "Dining." Lewis said the different names were too confusing, and while various options were discussed, "Dining" became the answer. The new title is easy to remember and descriptive, which is what the department was going for, he said.
