Ball State University students will be able to offer suggestions on what services should be added to the rec center during its expansion in a student services survey being organized by Student Government Association.
Facilities, Planning and Management representatives presented plans for the expansion at the SGA meeting Wednesday to receive student input and answer any questions on the plans thus far.-á
Gregory Graham, assistant director of Facilities Planning, and Daniel Byrnes, director of Sports Facilities Management and Recreation Services, brought a PowerPoint presentation of the rec center plans. There were pictures and examples of the services at other universities such as Ohio University and Miami University of Ohio.
The center will included amenities that Ball State students said they wanted, Graham said. There are plans to add more rooms for group exercise and meetings for organizations. The rec center may also include expanded gyms, elevated tracks, a larger fitness center, rock climbing and a place to rent outdoor equipment. -á
The cost of the new facility is unknown because it is still in the planning process according to Tom Morrison, associate vice President for Human Resources and State relations, said. Money for the expansion will come from fundraising and student fees.
"It is too early to tell when fees for students will start," Morrison said. "The goal is the students who will utilize the facility will be paying the fees."-á
The two architectural firms planning the expansion are MSKTD and Associates and Moody Nolan, Byrnes said. -á
Byrnes anticipates the planning will take about a year to a year and a half because the plans have to be detailed, and it may take two years to build. "It's hard to tell how long it will take but hopefully it will be on that schedule," he said.-á -á
SGA is forming a survey for the Student Services Web Site to find out what students think should go in the rec center, according to Asher Lisec, president of SGA.-á
Today's Black Women will speak to the senators at the next meeting to explain why it should be given a seat on SGA.
