OUR VIEW: Generous donations

AT?ISSUE:?Students should not take for granted the contributions of alumni, benefactors

Although state funded, Ball State University could not function without the generosity of individuals across the country.

While Ball State provides students' education, much of the extra and co-curricular enrichment is a result of the money given by alumni and benefactors.

It is easy to take their support for granted.

Anything from small, one-time donations to life insurance policies are donated, sometimes anonymously, to help Ball State provide the best opportunities to students.

David and Mary Jane Sursa made multiple generous donations to the music department, John B. and June M. Scheumann donated $4 million for the football stadium - and countless other individuals donate money to support Ball State and the different colleges and departments within the university.

Sometimes their requests are specific, requiring use in scholarships or a particular reason or purpose. Other times money ends up in a general fund.

In either event, the money is put to use more often than students stop to think about. Technology updates, scholarships and awards are just a few things that donations help support.

Greek organizations also receive large amounts of alumni support. Many alumni of greek organizations help purchase and keep up fraternity houses.

From anonymous gifts to multi-million dollar donations to construct buildings, donations from a variety of people help the university.

Donors are often overlooked or taken for granted. Without their support, however, Ball State would not be what it is today.
