The Alpha Chi Omega sorority and the Delta Tau Delta fraternity will attempt to raise more than $10,000 for charity this weekend with a few hundred watermelons.
The Ball State University Greek organizations are sponsoring the 34th annual Watermelon Bust on Saturday at LaFollette Field. Event co-coordinators Lindsey Wilson of Alpha Chi Omega and Joel Sheets of Delta Tau Delta said the proceeds will benefit the American Red Cross and A Better Way, which helps domestic violence victims.
Sheets hopes to equal the funds raised in years past, which was more than $10,000 each year.
"This is Ball State's biggest philanthropic event every year," Sheets said. "So we're hoping to at least match [previous years]."
The main event of the day will be the watermelon relays, Sheets said. The object is to carry the watermelon a certain distance and pass it off to a teammate. Breaking or "busting" the watermelon results in disqualification of the team.
Wilson said there will be a number of side games as well, such as a seed spitting contest, watermelon eating, a hug relay and a back and forth toss game. There will also be a number of inflatable games that are open to anyone, provided by the Ball State Student Government Association. A DJ will also be present to provide music all day.
Teams will be divided into four divisions: fraternity, sorority, co-ed and independent. Individuals are also invited to register.
Wilson expressed hopes to sign up more than 50 teams to compete. As of Thursday, 40 teams of six people have signed up to participate.
Registration for the event will begin at 9 a.m. with the events beginning at 10 a.m. It will last until about 2 p.m.
