After a disappointing finish at the Xavier Invitational Tournament last week, the men's golf team has resurrected itself to a second place position through 36 holes at the Earl Yestingsmeier Invitational in Delaware County.
With a team score of 561, the Cardinals trail Detroit University by one stroke.
"It was a pretty good day for us," coach Mike Fleck said. "We played consistent. All our players hung in there and put productive numbers on the board."
Freshman Travis Smith, who shined at the Xavier Tournament, posted scores of 70 and 74. Wayne Denger lead the Cardinals with a second round score of 66, which is four under par. The senior is tied for third place individually with six birdies coming from his second round performance.
"I told the guys we needed to get low numbers and we got that," Fleck said. "We went out there and took care of our business. All of our guys performed well."
Having put themselves in good position for the last round of 18 holes, the Cardinals are looking for a first place finish. Fleck stated that the first day is all about putting the team in position for the final round. Contrary to last week, the Cardinals posted low scores from the entire team, showcasing the collective effort Fleck has been seeking.
"Collectively as a team we did a nice job," Fleck said. "From top to bottom, all eleven of our players stayed focused and played well."
Staying within Indiana boundaries, the women's golf team competed at the Shootout at the Legends Golf Course in Franklin. After two rounds of play, the Cardinals are tied for fourteenth with a combined score of 624. Sophomore Sarah Windlan, who played in two high school state championships at the Legends for the Anderson Highland Scots, shot a career-low 73 in the second round.
"It's always good to see your players shoot a career best," coach Katherine Mowat said. "It's a milestone in someone's college career when you can come up with those scores."
No. 1 women's player Kallie Harrison shot a 77 for both rounds, tying Windlan for 43rd overall.
Even though the Cardinals have had a decent fall, according to Mowat, she has yet to see a great finish by her players.
"We know we can compete," Mowat said. "We just need to keep playing. I don't know if we will be able to make a big move from where we are now, but if we play a good final round I'll be happy."
