Two freshmen football players remain in jail without bail as of Monday night after being arrested in connection with the theft of laptops in Woody and Shales halls, according to police reports and university officials.
Brandon Houston and Eulas Taylor III were arrested Friday on suspicion of two counts of burglary and three counts of receiving stolen property, according to the reports. They are suspended indefinitely from the football program for violating team rules, according to a statement by head football coach Brady Hoke.
"I'm not going to comment until we know all the facts," Director of Intercollegiate Athletics Tom Collins said. "It's not fair to them to comment until we know what happened."
According to the report. the players were arrested at 9:30 a.m. Friday in connection with a theft that occured early Friday morning in Shales Hall Room 419. A burglary report was filed by Cody Buckman, who lives in room 419, regarding a laptop and charger that disappeared around 2:30 a.m.
Buckman said the items were taken while he was outside for a fire alarm, and he had shut the door to his room but left it unlocked, according to the report. When he returned to his room after the fire alarm he noticed his computer was gone, the report said.
Woody Hall resident Kimberly Gibson also filed a burglary report for her Apple laptop, which was taken between 2 a.m. and 2:20 a.m., before the fire alarm. Kacie Whitmore, Gibson's roommate, said her laptop was taken as well.
"I went to the bathroom to take a quick shower, and when I got back, both mine and my roommate's computers were gone," resident Kacie Whitmore said. "At first I thought it was a prank, but after I asked around, I went to call the police."
Gibson said she spent the night at a friend's house, but after Whitmore contacted her, she filed a report with university police Friday morning.
Buckman and Gibson are both referenced as complainants on the arrest records for Houston and Taylor. Woody and Shales halls share a tower in the LaFollette Complex.
Taylor, who started five of the first six games, was suspended from the game Saturday against Central Michigan University. Houston was redshirted and has not played this season.
