FOOTBALL: BSU running back Lewis out for season

Ball State University running back MiQuale Lewis will be out for the rest of the season after suffering a shoulder injury Saturday against the University at Buffalo, according to Ball State coach Brady Hoke.

He suffered the injury on a 54-yard run late in the fourth quarter when he was tackled by Buffalo defensive back Ramon Guzman.

"He was running the ball well and he was really picking up the offense where we could use him more in the passing game," Hoke said. "It's a setback to him and it's always a setback to the team."

Lewis leads the team in rushing with 280 yards and picked up his first collegiate touchdown against Buffalo.

B.J. Hill and Larry Bostic will continue to fight for the starting spot at running back. Hoke said he wasn't sure who would start against Central Michigan University on Saturday.

There's a chance Lewis could receive a medical redshirt, but it is not likely.

According to NCAA.org, a Division I student-athlete can apply for a hardship waiver if a season-ending injury or illness occurs in the first half of the season. The student-athlete, however, must not have participated in either more than two games or 20 percent (3 games, in Ball State's case) of the school's games.

Lewis played in all six contests thus far.

In other news, middle linebacker Brad Seiss was released from the hospital last Wednesday after suffering a skin infection.

Hoke said the fifth-year senior lost 12 pounds during his illness and will not play Saturday at Central Michigan.

"They're still doing some blood work, but he feels better," Hoke said.
