CROSS COUNTRY: Ball State travels to Bowling Green; team healthiest since start of season

Cardinals tuning up this weekend at Falcon Invitational

The Ball State University women' cross country team heads to Bowling Green, Ohio for its final tune-up before the Mid-America Conference championships.

Bowling Green State University will host the race, which will be held at the Forrest Creason Golf Course. The women's race kicks off at 10:45 a.m. and is set to have five MAC teams in the competition along with non-conference schools as the University of Dayton, Xavier University and IPFW.

Head coach Todd Lane is looking forward to the weekend with a healthy team and a final chance to get adjusted before the bigger meets.

"We've finally worked all the problems out and we're definitely ready to take some steps forward," Lane said. "We're about the healthiest we've been since I've been around and that makes everything better when we're getting late into the season."

Injuries have plagued the Cardinals all year with seniors Rose Lehe, and Amanda Ponsot and sophomore Vanessa Gilbert all missing time. Because of all the injuries, freshmen Sarah Kehe and Ali Bishel have taken on leadership in races so far this season and will attempt to keep pace this weekend.

Posing a large challenge this weekend for the Cardinals will be Bowling Green. The Falcons' men's and women's teams are coming off of first place performance last weekend at the All-Ohio championships.

Bowling Green head coach Cami Wells said she is eager to see the MAC competition, and with everything falling into place, is looking forward to the rest of the season.

"We're definitely looking forward to seeing other MAC schools including Ball State, who will present a challenge for us," Wells said.

The goal for Saturday's meet is to have one more successful race before the MAC Championships.

"Nobody will be staying home with all of our runners set to run at the MAC and this weekend we just need our fourth and fifth to take a couple big steps forward," Lane said. "Everyone is basically ready to go and we're set."
