Group helps off-campus community

Service to assist students not living in residence halls

If off-campus students have ever felt out of the loop regarding campus happenings, a new program under the Office of Student Rights and Community Standards hopes to make that a thing of the past, Director David Fried said.

The Student Government Association welcomed Fried and Graduate Assistant Danielle Denton as guest speakers of the Off-Campus Caucus Wednesday. Fried and Denton introduced Off-Campus Student Services as a point of contact for all students who do not live on campus.

The program was first considered last spring. In order to enhance communication between Ball State University and off-campus students, it concluded that a more individualized service needed to be offered, Fried said.

"That is part of our challenge, and that is part of our role," he said.

Off-Campus Student Services will focus on informing off-campus students of university activities, as well as resources in Muncie.

The program's initial tasks include a Web site set to launch late this month and regular newsletters sent to off-campus students. The office plans to work closely with SGA to implement these tasks.

Other issues addressed during Wednesday's SGA meeting were student safety, campus improvements and a possible shuttle to Indianapolis International Airport for students.
