FIELD HOCKEY: Top goal scorers square off in home match-up

Ball State looks for first win of season against No. 10 Indiana

Two all-conference goal scorers, one from the Mid-American Conference and one from the Big Ten, will lead their teams Saturday afternoon as Ball State University's field hockey team plays host to No. 10 Indiana University.

The Cardinals' Lindsay Quay and the Hoosiers' Lydia Schrott have led their team in scoring for the past two seasons and will be matched up for the fourth time in their collegiate careers.

"Lydia and Lindsay are both good goal scorers," coach Annette Payne said. "It's going to be a fun match-up because you have two offensive threats and two very solid defensive teams."

Quay enters this weekend after scoring three goals in the Cardinal's two games last weekend and was named the MAC Player of the Week. The senior is also climbing Ball State's all-time career goals list. With 26 career goals Quay needs only seven more to tie June Lenher for 10th place.

Schrott was named a second team All-American last season and currently has 33 career goals. Schrott comes into this match against the Cardinals after scoring a hat trick last Sunday against Longwood University in a 5-0 win.

"We are just concerned about the whole team not one player," Quay said. "We want to win and just need to come out and play a full 70 minutes."

Ball State enters this weekend in search of its first win of the season after losing to the College of William and Mary 4-1 and Northwestern University 4-3 last weekend.

Despite Quay having more than half the Cardinal's shots on goal and three of the four Cardinal goals, Ball State was outshot 45-14 in those two games.

"Lindsay keeps working hard and keeps getting ready to answer the teams who may double and triple-team her," Payne said. "Teams are going to be looking to shut her down and [Quay] is going to have to be ready for that."

Entering this season Ball State lost three of its top four goal scorers from last year. Besides Quay the Cardinals had no other player who scored more than eight points last season.

With teams now potentially starting to mark Quay, Payne is in search of another source of offense.

"You just can't rely on one player," she said. "Lindsay is not a selfish player so if it takes her getting triple teamed for her teammates to get open and score goals that is fine by her."

Indiana comes into Saturday's game ranked No. 10 in the nation but has lost two of its last three games.

A large reason for the Hoosier's high ranking is due to the team's offense which currently leads the Big Ten Conference in goals and penalty corner attempts.

"It doesn't brother us that they are No. 10," Quay said. "We think of every team as the same team and every team we need to play 100 percent against."

Along with the offense, Indiana's defense has not allowed a goal in its last 103 minutes of play and starting goaltender Haley Exner has a 1.66 goals against average to lead the Big 10.

"We are definitely going to have to work as a team," forward Tara Reed said. "Indiana has a man-to-man defense so we have to transfer the ball to the midfield and distribute the ball."
