Democrats register student voters

Ball State organization assists with paperwork, gives information

By offering donuts and juice to attract students, the Ball State University Democrats hope to encourage people to register to vote and to inform them on the voting process.

Students voting in the midterm elections can sign up at the voter registration drive sponsored by the University Democrats on Wednesday and Thursday.

"I think it raises awareness in local politics instead of mainstream national elections," student volunteer Andrea Weise said about the drive.

Located in the South Commuter lot on Wednesday and the North Commuter lot on Thursday, University Democrats will provide students with all the paperwork to be filled out. All that students will be required to bring is their driver's license numbers and addresses.

While the University Democrats hold the drive every year, it gets the biggest turnout during an election year. In 2004 they registered 200 people, and this year their goal is at least 500, President Jacob Clere said.

The other goal of the drive is to inform people on the voting process. One of the main issues is absentee voting, which is mailing in a vote from a different place from the one in which the voter is registered.

Even though this event is being set up by the University Democrats, Clere said, anyone could register regardless of political affiliation.

Another reason Weise said she is volunteering is to get students to realize that they are part of a community.

"Students should be aware of things going on around them instead of just focusing on themselves," Weise said.
