CROSS COUNTRY: Cardinal runners fare well in Terre Haute

Freshman runner places 12th at intercollegiates

Running with the best that Indiana has to offer, the Ball State University women's cross country team competed at its first scored meet of the year Saturday in Terre Haute.

The Indiana Intercollegiate Cross Country Invitational, held at the site of the NCAA championship, was the second meet of the year. However, for a few athletes who have been nursing injuries this season, it was the first chance to compete.

The Cardinals were led by freshman Sara Kehe with a 12th place finish and a time of 18:34. Followed by Kehe were freshman Ali Bishel (17th, 18:44), and senior Rose Lehe (32nd, 19:19). The race was Lehe's first after returning from a nagging injury that has plagued her since last year.

Head coach Todd Lane, pleased with Saturday's results, remains optimistic. Lane said he is looking forward to the larger meets still to come.

"Everything with this part of the season and with what has been brought is exciting," Lane said. "Right now everyone is just getting going and with our injury situations we're going to give people time to work into things."

Winning with the best team score was Indiana University with a mark of 38. IU also had the overall winner, Jessica Gall, who cut the tape in 17:37. Taking second, third and fourth respectively were Valparaiso University [89], Purdue University [135] and Indiana State University [138].

Looking forward to next week, the Cardinals will have more runners returning from injuries. Sophomore Vanessa Gilbert is expected to join the team at the George Dales Invitational held in Kalamazoo, Mich.

Results from the Indiana Inter-collegiate invitational were encouraging when considering the lineup is just getting healthy. With many runners scoring in the top 50 Saturday (Lisa Arrowsmith, 39th and Amanda Ponsot, 48th, also scored in the meet's top 50) the future looks promising heading into next week.
