Admissions continues without dean

Office hires two assistant directors, keeps searching for other positions

Dean of Admissions and Enrollment Larry Waters remains on leave for the fourth straight week, while administrative changes continue in the department without him.

"We're moving forward, filling some vacancies," Tom Taylor, vice president for Enrollment, Marketing and Communications, said. "We are coming to the conclusion of one of the searches for an associate director, and we hope to begin interviews for a second associate director shortly."

These positions are part of a shuffle in the Admissions and Enrollment Office that Taylor said he began several months ago. Waters was placed on leave for personnel reasons just over a month ago, Taylor said, On Thursday, Taylor could still not comment on Water's return.

In Water's absence, the dean's duties in the office as well as traveling have been spread out among the staff, Chris Munchel, senior assistant director and acting associate director of Admissions, said. While no one person is carrying all of Water's responsibilities, Munchel said he is taking care of the office.

"Right now I am working a lot as far as overseeing the office, not necessarily taking over his role," he said.

Munchel said Taylor asked him to cover Water's position at the beginning of his leave. As of Thursday, Munchel said he did not know when Water would return to work.

"I haven't heard anything since the start, when he's been gone," Munchel said. "I'm not sure where it stands as far as his return or not."

Final candidate interviews for an assistant director position should be completed today, Taylor said. The department will begin filling two other professional positions.

Six employees have been brought onto the Admissions and Enrollment staff Munchel said. Jacqueline Howell and Crystal Davis are assistant directors of Admissions, and two graduate assistants and two interns have been brought in.

"This is getting the staff pretty close to being exactly where it needs to be," Munchel said.

The hiring and other changes have not adversely affected the department, or Ball State University's recruitment efforts, Taylor said. The staff has begun traveling around Indiana, surrounding and Midwestern states and the east coast, Munchel said.

"Certainly it's required people to step up and I don't want to minimize those efforts," Taylor said. "Certainly the staff has had to extend themselves, but I feel we are moving forward very productively."
