Businesses provide discounts

Local businesses offer break to Ball State community

With more than twenty-five local businesses offering discounts to Ball State University students, staff members or alumni, having a Ball State ID card can save money on everyday purchases.

Since its election, Team Lisec has been working to develop a list of Muncie businesses that offer discounts. Their list continues to grow as they attempt to convince more businesses to join in the discount plan.

In order for the community to work with Ball State, the Student Government Association contacted the Mayor of Muncie, Dan Canan, for his assistance in getting businesses to offer discounts.

"With the help of the mayor, we were able to work with local businesses, and get students a discount they would really enjoy," SGA president Asher Lisec said.

Places such as Subway, King Buffet and Papa John's Pizza are a few examples of where students can use their Ball State ID for discounted purchases.

"It gives them incentive to come in and see what we have to offer," Roxanne Rodenberger, TIS Bookstore manager, said.

TIS offers students a Rewards Card which gives them 3 percent off the total purchase, as well as an additional 5 percent back during buy-back at the end of the semester. TIS also offers a 10 percent discount on books and 20 percent discount on other items to Ball State faculty and staff. Graduate Assistants receive a 10 percent discount. To receive these discounts, a G.A. contract, faculty and staff picture ID or student reward card is required.

Johnny Carino's Country Italian, which is "predominately staffed by Ball State students" said manager Jeff Wiggins, offers a 10 percent discount to students and faculty with ID Johnny Carino's has been offering discounts to the Ball State community for three years.

Ritter's Frozen Custard, owned by former Ball State student Mike Hensley offers 10 percent off of any single menu item, excluding cakes and pies.

"I have numerous college students working for me, and student discounts was a topic that came up," said Hensley. Ritter's has only been open eleven weeks and started its ID discount offer the beginning of the fall semester.

The BSU ID discounts do not stop at bookstores and restaurants. Specific tanning salons cut students a break. Maui Tanning offers a 10 percent discount off of regular packages and lotion. Other tanning salons offering price cuts include A Place to Tan and Sun Kiss Tanning, which has offers in the college coupon book.

Even hotels such as the Hotel Roberts give students special rates. With a 25 percent discount on rooms, students, faculty, alumni and Ball State visitors can purchase a standard room for $72.00 or a suite for $92.00. "In a further attempt to attract Ball State students, The Hotel Roberts remodeled and renamed their restaurant to The University Club," said hotel manager Kirby Brown. The University Club offers students a 10 percent discount off meal purchases.

To find out if a business offers Ball State discounts, students can call or ask if the establishment provides special offers.
