SPEAK SOFLTY: U.S. can't trust U.N. to remove oppressor with military force

Kim Jong Il is not exactly the kind of guy we can trust. He is the ruthless leader of a suffering country, and we cannot sit idly by while he threatens our way of life. This is a dangerous man, and we cannot rely on his good judgment to keep us safe.

The United Nations seems to be dancing around doing something about Kim Jong Il. The U.N. Security Council, of course, will draft a resolution condemning North Korea's actions. The council might also impose economic sanctions against Kim Jong Il. The fact of these sanctions is that although they are intended to put economic pressure on the North Korean government, they end up hurting the innocent civilians who depend on international aid for their very survival.

North Korea is relatively isolated from the rest of the modern world. Its news media are owned and operated by the government. Kim Jong Il himself controls everything the media says in their reports. The North Korean media went so far as to report that the first time Kim played a round of golf, he scored a perfect 18 holes in one. Suspicious, isn't it?

The people of North Korea see western civilization as evil and have an extremely distorted view of their leader. The innocent civilians of North Korea see Kim Jong Il as a god, as well as his father Kim Il Sung, who died several years ago.

North Korea has been suffering since the end of the Korean war in 1953. The war left the Korean peninsula bitterly divided, and it left a scar that will likely never heal.

North Korean people are suffering under a communist dictatorship. They have tens of thousands of residents who try to escape over the border to China. It is quite simply inhuman to keep these people in this condition. This is a nation in which most people starve despite international aid totaling around 350,000 tons of food every year. This is a nation where hospitals have no IV bags - instead they use empty Coke and beer bottles.

One thing North Koreans do plenty of is intimidate others: They wave their missiles in our country's face and threaten to start a third world war should we ever attempt anything. In fact, their missiles are the one thing they have that are truly of any concern to us.

This is an issue we need to walk gingerly around. Our technology for knocking their missiles out of the air before they reach us is not 100 percent accurate.

A nuclear war is in nobody's best interests, obviously, so in this case, all other forms for dealing with the problem should be examined.

North Korea is dangerous. They have a ruthless and dangerous leader who can be trusted under no circumstances.

In this matter, we cannot rely on the United Nations. In the past, the U.N. has been soft on people like Kim Jong Il. It will condemn a leader's actions, but it would not dare take up arms against one of its member nations. I hate to say it, but a tactical strike such as those against Iraq and Afghanistan might be necessary.

Kim Jong Il must be removed from power as soon as possible. It is in the best interests of the people of North Korea - and the rest of the world.
