AT ISSUE: Students must be aware of surroundings, take proper precautions

Muncie doesn't have the theft issues New York City does, but Ball State University isn't as crime-free as some might think.

Students need to be aware of their surroundings and be sure to act accordingly. Locking your car and keeping your bicycle properly stored is a necessary part of being on or near a college campus - or any populated area in general.

Even though you know your neighbors or floormates, you might not know their guests or other passers by.

To prevent theft, the best bet is to remove all temptation. Be sure to take every possible precaution.

Take your CDs inside with you instead of leaving them in the car. Don't leave your bike on the porch. If you have to leave it outside, invest in a nice lock for it. Remember to lock the door and windows in your home and car.

Always be sure to report any missing items to University Police Department.

Although these steps won't necessarily save your property, it's good to think along the lines of prevention.

If people really want to steal, they're going to do it. However, most theft spawns from opportunity - an unattended bookbag or a car with the windows down.

Your responsibility is to limit these opportunities as much as possible.

No one is constantly vigilant in keeping his property safe, but proper precautions can keep theft to a minimum.
