ALUMNUS: Detectives charge former Cardinal athlete with three felonies for soliciting sex to minor

VIRIGNIA BEACH, Va. - A former Ball State University volleyball player was caught in an Internet sex sting, according to a report by WTKR-TV in Virginia Beach, Va .

Detectives charged Joshua Zuidema with soliciting "sexual activity" from a 12-year-old girl he met in a Yahoo! chat room.-áThe "girl" was a Virginia Beach police detective. -á

The search-warrant affidavit says Zuidema used the screen name "swnghtr" - a abbreviated volleyball term-á- to set up a meeting with the girl.

The affidavit says Zuidema confessed during his arrest June 30 to "using a personal computer at his residence ... to communicate sexually to an undercover detective." -á

Police seized a computer from the home of Zuidema's parents, according to the search warrant.

Zuidema ended his college career in 2003 after a two-year stint at Ball State.

He is charged with three felonies for his use of the computer and his conversations with the undercover detective. He also faces a marijuana charge, according to the WTKR-TV report.

"Josh was a good player in our program," coach Joel Walton told the Daily News. "He was a good teammate. I'm shocked that something like this would happen."
