OUR VIEW: Lifelong effort to achieve long life

AT?ISSUE:?Students must consider how actions in college could affect future health

One thing your orientation leader never told you is that college life can lead to cancer.

The pressure of classes, work and other day-to-day activities can add to peer pressure from friends to drink or smoke.

These, among other, aspects of college culture can cause students to develop habits that could one day lead to cancer. Although cancer isn't something we think about every day, the things we're doing right now will affect our bodies in the future.

Students must be aware of their actions and remember that their behaviors now can and cause substantial consequences.

Relay for Life participants tend to focus on older generations, but just as you're studying for your future career, you have to plan for your future health.

Excessive drinking can become a habit of college students. It is also one of the leading causes of colon cancer, according to the Harvard Medical School.

Tanning and smoking are also common among college students. Smoking can lead to many forms of the disease, including cancer of the mouth, bladder, lung and kidney.

It isn't about refusing to drink, smoke or go tanning. It's about moderation. It's about awareness.

Participating in these parts of college social life is understandable - but be careful not to overindulge. The threat of cancer is just one more reason to think twice about your actions.

College isn't just a time to have fun. It's a time to learn life lessons. Pick up good habits now to maintain a healthful future.
