Led by senior Katie Sundberg, the Ball State University women's golf team won Monday's Butler Spring Invitational. Sundberg shot a two-over-par 74 to earn medalist honors.
The team's score of 317 was three strokes better than host Butler University. The Cardinals had three players finish in the top 10. Kallie Harrison shot a 78 and tied for third, while Carmen Bodine tied for 10th after carding an 80.
Amber Uphaus (85) tied for 16th and the tournament's defending individual champion, Julie Harder (87), tied for 23rd.
The Cardinals fared well despite sub-par weather with temperatures in the 40s.
"Conditions weren't very good," Sundberg said. "It was pretty windy and cold."
The competition was scheduled to take place over a two-day span but was shortened to a single round due to weather.
"It was unfortunate we had to cut this one short," coach Katherine Mowat said.
Sundberg is the reigning 2005 Mid-American Conference medalist. She led the Cardinals with a 78.6 scoring average in the fall.
"Katie has so much talent," Mowat said. "She is so strong mentally and today reminded me how focused she can be."
Ball State finished second place in this tournament last year, two strokes behind Oakland. Harder shot a pair of 79s to earn medalist honors.
Ball State finished 16th out of 17 teams two weeks ago in Arizona. The Cardinals responded well returning to Indiana by winning the tournament held at Broadmoor Country Club in Indianapolis.
Sundberg thinks that this event will give the team momentum for the rest of the season.
"This tournament did not have as strong of a field but gave us confidence," Sundberg said. "It will give us a boost for the rest of the season."
The team's next tournament will be Monday and Tuesday at the UNCW Lady Seahawk Invitational.
