Hard work and optimism continued to pay off as the Cardinals added yet another impressive effort to their season.
The Ball State University women's indoor track and field team closed out the two-day Meyo Invitational Saturday with their best performance so far this season. The event, held at Notre Dame, offered plenty of competition, and several of the squad members took advantage of this.
Sophomore Amber Williams broke the school record in the 60-meter hurdles and also hit the NCAA provisional qualifying mark. Her time of 8.26 seconds beat out the record previously set by Linese Gordon (8.44) in 2000 and also is the fifth-fastest time in the nation so far this year. Williams also set a personal record in the 200 (24.38) and finished sixth.
Jill Scully also had a big day by breaking a school and personal record in the 5,000 meters in a time of 16:31.26, which is also a NCAA provisional qualifying mark and the sixth fastest time in the nation this year.
Although there was no team scoring, the runners, jumpers and throwers placed high in nearly every event.
"The meet went well," head coach Sue Parks said. "A number of our athletes had personal bests and we feel like we are right where we need to be at this point of the season."
Amanda Ponsot and Vanessa Gilbert both broke personal records in the 800 meters (2:11.93) and the mile (5:06.09), respectively. -áTerri Abraham added a fourth place finish in the long jump (19-03 1/4) and sixth place in the triple jump (40-01 1/4), also a personal best. Freshman Jessica Genovese broke a personal record as well in the high jump (5-05) while placing 13th.
