All season long the women's basketball team has relied on its depth. This held true again on Saturday as five players scored at least eight points in a 70-56 win over Buffalo.
Erica Cotton led the Cardinals in scoring with 16 points. Julie DeMuth scored 13 points and grabbed nine rebounds, while Kelsey Corbin added 12 points and four assists.
"I love coaching this team because you just never know who is going to come in and make a difference," coach Tracy Roller said.
Ball State University (13-7, 6-3 Mid-American Conference West) found itself tied at 30 less than two minutes into the second half. But the Cards went on a 22-8 run over the next 10 minutes and cruised to the win by hitting 14-of-17 free throws in the second half.
"I thought we did a good job in the second half by really getting it into the post," Roller said. "We were a lot more patient in our offense. I was really happy with our overall play."
The Cardinals led by one point at halftime, 28-27. Corbin said the Cards were rushing their shots in the first half.
"We needed to work the ball around a little bit more and not take quick shots," Corbin said. "In the second half, I think that we got into a little bit more of a flow. We got into our fast break and got some open looks."
Ball State had a season-low eight turnovers in the contest while Buffalo committed 21. Brooke Meunier led the Bulls (7-12, 2-7 MAC) with a game-high 20 points.
Cotton, who led Ball State in scoring for the fourth time in five games, said the Cardinals looked to attack Buffalo's defense in the second half.
"It just came down to executing offensively," Cotton said. "We did a good job on defense in the first half, but we didn't score. We just executed offensively and defensively in the second half and everything came together."
Ball State's bench outscored the Bulls' bench 21-7. It marks the seventh time in eight games where the Cardinals have outscored their opponents' bench.
