UPDATE: Residents report series of tire slashings

Student, neighbors near downtown find cars with flat tires

When Ball State University senior Erin Winzenread checked her car Tuesday morning, she found a note on her windshield.

The note was from her neighbor notifying her that she had two flat tires, and that she should not drive the car until they were repaired.

And she was not the only person with this problem Tuesday.

Muncie Police received numerous reports of vehicle vandalism Tuesday after a rash of tire slashings occurred within the city. A total of 15 cars were reported damaged, most with two tires deflated, according to police reports. Winzenread, of 519 W. Charles St., said her neighbor's car also had two flat tires, and all of the tires of her landlord's truck were damaged.

She called the Muncie Police Department at 10:30 a.m., and they told her that she was the 13th person to report the problem, she said. Police reports said the vandalism happened some time between 1 a.m. and 7 a.m. for most of the victims.

Assistant Director of Public Safety Bob Fey said students should report acts of vandalism to the police immediately for two reasons. Insurance companies need proof if a student is filing for assistance, and the police would like the information to track and prevent crime in certain areas.

Sgt. Allen Williams, of the Muncie police, said he suspects that a teenager or group of teenagers committed the acts of vandalism, and he hopes the curfew Muncie recently enacted will help.

If someone has any information concerning the incidents or sees someone suspicious, he should call the police and the neighborhood crime watch, Williams said.
