Men's volleyball coach Joel Walton stresses ball control to his players. When No. 9 Ball State (10-0, 1-0 Midwestern Intercollegiate Volleyball Association) travels to Wilberforce, Ohio today to take on the Central State Marauders, ball control should not be an issue. The undefeated Cardinals take on Div. II Central State (0-3) as another non-conference team mixed into the regular season schedule.
"Part of what were doing," Walton said, "is helping these teams because they only have 10 games scheduled, and we're trying to give them a chance to play a few matches."
Central State has several players from Chicago and Columbus, Ohio. These are typically a "hot-spot" for recruiting men's volleyball players. The Marauders have only three freshman, but most of their upperclassmen are playing their first games also. Central State is in the non-scholarship division of the MIVA.
Central State scored 20 points total (in the match) against Div. III Carthage. During this match they had a negative .324 hitting percentage with five kills in 37 attempts with 23 reception errors in one match. In comparison, Ball State has 23 total reception errors in 10 matches.
Central State also struggled against Clarke, hitting negative .143 with nine kills on 26 attempts and 13 reception errors.
Ball State's starting roster will include Todd Chamberlain, Mark Termion, Mark Rumschik, Ted Torres at libero, Jim Shiel at setter and Matt McCarthy and Doug Wilman at middle.
"I would like to start that group and end with that group," Walton said. "I would also like for Carlos Ramos to see his first action of the year."
The Cardinals' game plan is the same as it has been all year; play consistently with a .300 or higher hitting percentage and hit 88 percent of their serves.
"Our toughest thing is just going to be trying to figure out what they'll do," Walton said.
