Fraternity plans events for Black History Month

Members support proactive approach toward civil rights

Ball State University's Alpha Phi Alpha Fraternity, Inc. Theta Xi Chapter will play its part in celebrating Black History Month through a series of events this week.

The week of events strives to inform students about how important black history is to American society, said junior Nate Shell, a member of Alpha Phi Alpha.

"I think more people are becoming aware of black history, but there's always that one more individual that needs to hear it," Shell said.

Senior Jamie Wright, correspondence secretary for Alpha Phi Alpha, said he hopes the week helps emphasize the importance of remaining unified and proactive in modern America - qualities that were imperative during the Civil Rights movement.

"People in the Civil Rights movement jeopardized their life and their freedom for the advancement of others," Wright said. "So many people nowadays - we just talk about it."

The week of events begins with a Black History Game Show at 7 p.m. today in Teachers College Room 102. The game show will allow students to learn more about the people that help black culture thrive.

Other key events include the second annual observance of National Black HIV/AIDS Awareness Day on Tuesday. Alpha Phi Alpha, representatives of Ball State's Health Education, the Black Student Association and several Muncie organizations will sponsor the events including free HIV testing, a sexual health information fair and an HIV speakers' panel.

"I think it'll be a great opportunity for people to see firsthand and actually hear about ... how serious an issue HIV and AIDS is," Shell said.

Throughout the week, Shell hopes all events will promote a positive social environment for student interaction, Senior Kenneth Daniels, president of Alpha Phi Alpha, said promoting diversity on the Ball State campus is an ongoing goal.

"Every event we do is not for a specific race, group or a specific organization," he said. "It's for the student body as a whole."
