LETTERS: Governor should increase support to Indiana universities

Dear Editor,

There are many concerns I have with the governor's State of the State.

He did not mention the 7,000 jobs Indiana lost or his outsourcing of jobs to out-of-state companies. With the issues he chose to discuss, he offered few details.

Perhaps one of the most serious omissions was not addressing the critical needs of Indiana's public universities, like Ball State University.

Higher education suffered under the biennium budget passed last year by the Republican-controlled House and Senate. The bill was signed into law by Gov. Mitch Daniels.

Yet, during Wednesday night's speech, higher education was absent from his agenda list.

If the governor is sincerely committed to economic development and the creation of good-paying jobs in Indiana, then our state must make a genuine investment in higher education.

I challenge the governor to address this critical issue yet this session and offer a substantive proposal with details, facts and figures.-á

Indiana is at a critical junction in its economic history.

Either we choose to go forward utilizing the resources of our outstanding universities in Indiana, or we ignore higher education and retreat from the progress our state has already made, while losing our young people to other states that offer greater opportunities.

The only wise choice is to move forward and invest in public universities, like Ball State.
