Students sponsor march for awareness of sexual violence

V-Day Ball State University 2006 will present "Break the Silence" tonight to protest and raise awareness about violence against women. The event, part of the V-Day 2006 College Campaign, takes place at 6:30 p.m. tonight at University Green."Break the Silence" is an advocacy event sponsored by V-Day Ball State University in conjunction with Ball State's chapter of Feminists for Action. The event will include a march that will take participants down McKinley Avenue, Riverside Avenue, New York Avenue, Neely Avenue and back to the University Green. The event will also include local speakers who will discuss the issue of sexual violence in the community. A candlelight vigil for victims of sexual violence and a time for testimony will also be offered. Fundraisers will take place to benefit A Better Way, a local women's shelter, and the V-Day 2006 effort. Donations will be accepted, and merchandise and refreshments such as hot chocolate and apple cider will be sold.Susan Atkinson, an event coordinator, said she encourages all students - male and female - to get involved. "We want to have a unified front against violence," she said. "Our expectation is to raise awareness that will attract a lot of attention to our cause and get as many people as we can to come show their support."
