iPod
Wednesday, Apple unveiled a new iPod that will add video features into the mix, allowing users to have access to "music, audiobooks, audio Podcasts, video Podcasts, home movies, music videos and popular television shows like 'Lost' and 'Desperate Housewives,'" Apple's Web site said.
The new iPod will begin to ship next week in the US. There will be two different models: a 30GB model, retailing for $299, and a 60GB model, retailing for $399. Both models will be available in black or white designs.
The iPod will feature a 2.5-inch color screen and will have the ability to hold up to 15,000 songs, 25,000 photos or over 150 hours of video, Apple's Web site said.
Steve Jobs, Apple's CEO, has high hopes for the iPod and said it is "the best music player ever."
"It's 30 percent thinner and has 50 percent more storage than its predecessor - yet it sells for the same price and plays stunning video on its 2.5-inch color screen," Jobs said. "Because millions of people around the world will buy this new iPod to play music, it will quickly become the most popular portable video player in history."
Along with the unveiling of the new iPod, Apple introduced a newer version of iTunes, the 6th version, which will provide users with access to video content Jobs believes will revolutionize the industry.
"We're doing for video what we've done for music - we're making it easy and affordable to purchase and download, play on your computer and take with you on your iPod," Jobs said. "Right out of the gate, we're offering 2,000 music videos, Pixar's short films and hit prime time TV shows like 'Desperate Housewives' and 'Lost.'"
iTunes will also be offering music videos to fans, providing users with the ability to see and hear their favorite artists at the same time. Episodes, as well as the short films and music videos, will cost $1.99 on iTunes, Apple's Web site said.
LG VX9800
Verizon Wireless has introduced customers to the LG VX9800. After taking reservations for over a month for the phone, Verizon finally began selling it in stores. The phone retails for $299.99, after a $50 rebate and with a two-year contract.
The company has tagged the phone, "The Ultimate Wireless Multimedia Device," due to its capabilities which range from enhanced messaging to digital photography and video to the ability to play personal files uploaded from an external memory source.
The VX9800 features a 1.3 megapixel integrated camera and camcorder with flash. It has the ability to record 15-second video clips and can hold up to 315 pictures and 144-153 videos based on the resolution of the images, Verizon's Web site said.
The camera on the phone can capture photos at resolutions up to 1280 by 960 pixels and can zoom up to four times the image size, depending on the resolution.
Additional features on the camera include Close-up Mode, a three-, five- or 10-second self-timer and night mode.
The phone also has external memory capability, which means if users purchase a MiniSDTM memory card, they can insert it into the phone and have the ability to upload MP3s to the embedded MP3 player or transfer digital pictures, music files and videos back and forth from their PC to their phone, Verizon's Web site said.
LG Electronics president Juno Cho said, "The VX9800 represents the ultimate convergence of today's most innovative mobile technologies and brings the very latest advances in wireless entertainment and handset design together for a complete multimedia experience."
The VX9800 is compatible with V CAST, Bluetooth, Mobile Web 2.0, Video on Demand and text, video and picture messaging, Verizon's Web site said.
