LETTER TO THE EDITOR: United States not being coerced into leaning toward political right

Dear Editor,

In response to Steve Nawara's Oct. 11 column, "Republicans pushing country further right," I'd like to take a moment to point out a few things. I honestly find it hard to believe that an educated political science major would have a leg to stand on in presenting an argument such as this using an example that was shot down by the very government that is being criticized.

The government is a series of checks and balances, which should be well understood by Nawara. This kind of structure prevents extremely radical actions, such as Sen. Patricia Miller's proposal. Since the bill never made it to a session or even a debate, using this as an example of the "American Taliban" pushing the country one way is extreme. Perhaps a little research into the idea that the Taliban carried is a good idea, too.

The beautiful thing about our country is that everyone is an individual - blacks, whites, homosexuals, heterosexuals, men, women, etc. Claiming that the country is being "pushed" to the right is pretty difficult to prove. As individuals, we are built to use the tool we call reasoning; no people can be forced to believe something unless they want to. If a claim that the country is being "pushed" to the right is to be made, I'd expect to hear stories about intimidation on the streets to believe people are being forced. This is certainly not the case.

If the country is becoming more conservative, perhaps the people are allowing it to happen.

Something as simple as getting two - or more - political parties to remember that the government is here provided by the people and for the people could be the reason people are leaning more one way than the other. I believe the many times we've heard the Democratic Party use the term "what's good for the party" is getting to bother the people. The Democratic Party's best chance to be taken seriously and regain the respect it once had is to remember that working with the people and for the people is what this government was created for.
