An early two-goal lead wasn't enough for Ball State University's field hockey team. The Cardinals held a 2-0 lead in the first half, but fell to Kent State 3-2 in overtime on Saturday.
"We did get out to an early lead; we had a couple nice goals," coach Annette Payne said. "They were a result of being able to possess the ball and convert."
Lindsay Quay scored her fifth goal of the season on an assist from Chantelle Isaac. The goal ended a three-game drought in which Quay attempted 24 shots.
"Lindsay had been playing really well," Payne said. "It was nice to see her get one into the cage."
Tara Reed added the Cardinals' second goal at the 14:50 mark. The goal was unassisted and was Reed's second score this year.
"We've been working a lot on circle play, just finishing hardcore on the cage and corners, because we've had a lot of opportunities there where we just didn't put it in," Quay said after practice Thursday.
Kent State (4-12, 4-2 Mid-American Conference) answered right back with a goal just 34 seconds later. The Golden Flashes tied the game with six minutes remaining on a goal by Britt Van Pelt.
A goal by Mel Bierens De Haan seven minutes into overtime gave the Golden Flashes their fourth conference win.
"It was a play on our defensive circle edge," Payne said of the game-ending goal. "It was unfortunate the game had to go into overtime."
Tracy Bannister stopped six shots in goal for the Cards, including two in overtime. Kara Copeland and Linz Markwart combined to stop four shots for the Golden Flashes.
Ball State (2-11, 1-5 MAC) had 16 shots while Kent State took 18. The Golden Flashes added six penalty corners compared to five for the Cardinals.
Ball State has now lost three straight games. The Cardinals are in last place in the MAC with four games remaining.
"It's unfortunate that a few of those losses have been by one goal," Payne said. "We play everybody twice. Hopefully, that will be good thing."
