Two quick scoring strikes by Ohio to start the game were too much for the Ball State University field hockey team to overcome. Ohio scored two goals in the first four minutes of the game on Friday, winning its 14th straight game over Ball State, 3-0.
"We didn't come ready to play, which was a huge factor in the first five minutes," coach Annette Payne said.
Freshman defender Jodi Mann missed the game due to an ankle injury. Payne said she didn't know if Mann would be able to play today against Kent State.
Ohio (7-7, 5-1 Mid-American Conference) outshot the Cardinals 13-4 and had more penalty corners (9-3). Ohio used ball control to limit the Cards' shot attempts after Ball State recorded 53 shots in its previous two games.
"We didn't have ball possession or much momentum," Payne said. "We didn't really have control most of the game."
Jennifer Cote and Jessie Martin combined to shutout Ball State for the first time this season. Tracy Bannister stopped five shots in goal for the Cards.
Nikki Gnozzio and Torrie Albini opened with the first two goals for the Bobcats. Estienne Coetzee scored the final goal at the 57:25 mark.
Katie Kloeckener had two shots for the Cards, both on goal. Lindsay Quay was limited to one shot after firing 23 in her previous two games.
Ball State (2-10, 1-4 MAC) plays at Kent State ()today.
"(The Cardinals) need to come ready to play, ready to compete," Payne said.
