FIELD HOCKEY: Ball State falls to Central Michigan

Two have milestone games but cannot lead team to win

Two Ball State University field hockey players set career-marks on Saturday, but it wasn't enough to lead the Cardinals to a win.

Amanda Pavone scored her first career goal and Tracy Bannister stopped a career-high 15 shots in a 3-2 loss at Central Michigan.

"I really feel like we played well as a team," coach Annette Payne said. "We had some great passing patterns and good ball movement.

"The team did a very good job of commitment with what they had to do as individuals and with what they knew was going to make the difference."

Central Michigan (6-5, 3-1 Mid-American Conference) outshot the Cardinals, 22-13. Bannister stopped 15 of the Chippewas' shots, breaking her career high of 14 saves last year against Indiana.

"Tracy had some really good saves," Payne said. "She played well."

The Chippewas scored their first goal just 1:29 into the game. They added another goal at the 31:03 mark.

Lindsay Quay scored her fourth goal of the season with less than two minutes remaining in the first half. Maggie Durbin set up Quay's goal with her fourth assist this season.

"We had a great showing today on offensive effort and defensive effort," Payne said.

Central Michigan opened the second half with another goal to take a 3-1 lead. Pavone later answered with her first career goal at 61:48 on a rebound shot from Lauren Cruz.

Ball State (1-8, 0-2 MAC) held a 7-6 advantage in penalty corners.

Although Ball State failed to earn its first conference win, Payne said she was pleased with the Cards' performance.

"We set some goals for this weekend, and we accomplished them," she said. "Overall, I'm happy, and we're making progress."
