Spaceships and houses are not things commonly seen on the University Green, but when boxes are constructed into various shapes tonight, anything can be possible.
Dehority Residence Hall Complex presents Box City 2005 in an effort to raise awareness about homelessness in the Muncie community.
Box City will begin with the selling of boxes at 6 p.m. today. Students will then set up their box and spend the night in it on the University Green until Saturday at 6 a.m.
Large boxes cost $1, medium boxes cost 50 cents and small boxes cost 25 cents. Boxes can also be received by donating two cans of food. The money will go to Muncie Mission.
Students are encouraged to bring materials of all types to decorate their boxes and make the scene look like a box city.
The Dusty Miller Band, General Admission, Salem's Voice and Jonas will perform live music. Games, prizes, food and hot chocolate will also be provided.
"Last year there were prizes for the biggest and most artistic boxes," sophomore Kendall Coon said. "The grand prize winner received two $20 gift certificates to Red Lobster."
Ashley Woodson, a freshman, said she has no idea how or if she is going to decorate her box, but she said she was interested in seeing everyone's ideas.
Freshman Ashley Wallace, a member of the Dehority Food Committee, said she heard about the event through her hall council.
"I am not sure exactly how my box will turn out, but I know I will make some type of box," Wallace said. "I might bring some paint, but I am definitely going to bring a lot of blankets."
Coon said some people get a bunch of boxes and put them together to make multiple, connected rooms. When he participated with some guys on his floor last year, they interconnected the boxes with tunnels and ended up with three rooms.
"In the past, this event has had a big turnout and hopefully this year will continue that way," Wallace said.
