The wireless system that provides Internet access to students with laptops in Bracken Library is experiencing sporadic outages and connection problems, Bradley Faust, assistant dean for Library Information Technologies Services, said. The problem has not affected the library's computers, and Web access remains available through those computers."There's no need to make a large public announcement of the problem with 80 percent of the system functioning as it should," Faust said. He said until University Computing Systems notified his office of the nature of the problem and its scope, a broader notification would not be made to students.Loren Malm, assistant director of Security, Policy, Systems and Assessment with UCS, said bandwidth issues may be occurring as the various campus buildings near Bracken Library share Internet resources, which block Bracken Library's access, or an access point or hardware failure somewhere in the system could be causing the problems.Arthur Hafner, dean of University Libraries, was advised late Monday afternoon of the cause of the issue, and said the video screens at each of Bracken Library's main entrances would inform students of the problem."We have 280 computers online, and that's a large system, but the wireless opens our resources to the 1000s that carry laptops in here to research and to learn," Hafner said. "Anything that interferes with that interferes with the library's mission." The person responsible for networking was not in the office Monday, but should be able to assess the problem and set a timetable when he has an opportunity to investigate, Malm said.
