Gora joins Gov. Daniels on panel

Roundtable talks about solutions for high dropout rate

INDIANAPOLIS - Ball State University President Jo Ann Gora sat among some of Indiana's education experts Wednesday during a roundtable discussion about high school dropout rates.

Indiana's Education Roundtable is a group of leaders from schools, businesses and communities, which makes recommendations to the governor and superintendent of public instruction for improving student academics. Gora was one of 12 people (and one of four from higher education) at the discussion representing the education sector.

"I'm an educational leader; that's probably why I was appointed," Gora said.

Ball State produces more than one-third of the state's principals and superintendents, Gora said. The university is also the only university in Indiana to sponsor a charter school, she said.

Superintendent of Public Instruction Suellen Reed announced that Indiana charter schools received an extra $2.5 million from the U.S. Department of Education. Indiana is one of 10 states to receive the additional money for the 2005-2006 school year.

The money must be used to benefit the students, such as buying new lab equipment and furniture, Reed said during the conference.

The group spent more than an hour discussing Indiana's high dropout rates among high school students. It also recommended that schools receive more money to attract stronger teachers to low-income area schools.

Reed and Daniels agreed with the leaders.

"We can never resign ourselves to failure, especially when kids are involved," Daniels said.
