WOMEN'S GOLF BSU improves returning squad

Top five conference finishers return, team looks to improve depth

The women’s golf team returns to action this fall after a successful spring season that resulted in a fourth-place finish at the Mid-American Conference Championships. It was the team’s best finish at the championship in its history.

The top five finishers from the tournament return this year, and second-year coach Katherine Mowat said she looks forward to coaching a team with depth.

“We have much more depth than we had last year,” Mowat said. “I’m really excited for the team this year and I think we will have a lot of success early on.”

MAC champion Katie Sundberg returns for her senior with the team. Sundberg won the MAC tourney by one stroke shooting 72-77 while the team finished 22 shots behind MAC champion Kent State.

Only two seniors from last year will not be returning. Mowat brought in Kallie Harrison, a transfer student from Southern Illinois University in Edwardsville, and freshman Sarah Windlan from Anderson Highland High School. Harrison comes in after two successful seasons, when she was named the Great Lakes Valley Conference Freshman of the Year. She also set the school record for single-season scoring average (79.9).

“They both bring experience and depth to the team,” Mowat said. “I think they will fit in great with the team and really contribute.”

Four of the five matches scheduled for the fall are new to the team. The only course they return to this year is the team’s home match at The Player’s Club in Muncie. Ball State finished fifth in the Cardinal Classic in 2004, and senior Julie Harder was the team’s top finisher at ninth place. The Cardinal Classic is a player and coach favorite because of the home crowd.

“Our home tournament is always a lot of fun,” Mowat said. “Even though we do like that one, we still make sure every tournament all year long is equally important to that one.”

The goal for the squad this year is to improve upon the fourth-place finish last year at the MAC Championships in the spring. The players have been playing and preparing during the summer to help them reach that goal during the season.

“The girls are coming off the summer where they’ve been playing and practicing,” Mowat said. “Right away we have to know that everything we do in early September helps us in April, and we hope that will lead us into the post-season.”
