LETTER TO THE EDITOR: Diners' quarters worth more

Dear Editor,

I recently went to the Atrium for the first time this year to grab a little lunch. While trying to stay a little healthier (as well as save a little money) this semester, I decided to drink some water instead of my usual Dr. Pepper. While filling my recommended 16 ounce clear plastic cup, I looked up in between the soda machines and saw a sign that said something to the effect of, “Ball State University will now be charging $.25 for a cup of water due to the rising cost of PAPER. Please still continue to use the clear 16 ounce cups.”

I’ve got two problems with this. First, they are charging a quarter for something that doesn’t have paper in it or used for it. The only paper I can think of that might be used is the paper cover on a straw that someone might not even use. Come on Ball State, if you are going to give us an excuse for this policy, at least give a believable one.

The second problem I have with this is they are still requesting that we use the smaller plastic cups. I’m sorry, but if I’m going to start paying for tap water, I’m going to want more than 16 ounces. Either provide larger clear cups or don’t get upset when I start using the 32 ounce cup full of plain old ice water.

I understand a quarter isn’t really a whole lot of money, but when you think about it from the university’s perspective, it really adds up. I would guess, conservatively, Ball state students drink at least 1,000 cups of water a day. At a quarter each, that is $250 per day. I would think we are not only covering the rising cost of “paper” but adding a little more to dining services’ funds and receiving less in return — goodbye Woodworth.

I just wish this decision would have been a little more thought-out and possibly run past the Student Government Association before being implemented.
