FOOTBALL Young lineup to start against Iowa

Cardinals look to fill void left by players drafted in NFL

Several new faces will be in Ball State University’s starting lineup when the football team travels to Iowa this weekend.Coach Brady Hoke said seven or eight true freshmen could play this Saturday, including two starting on the offensive line. Six other freshmen are listed on the second-string of the depth chart.Andre Ramsey and Robert Brewster, both freshmen, will start against Iowa at tackle, and redshirt freshman Dan Gerberry is slated to start at center. Hoke said Brewster has bulked up from 330 pounds to 348 pounds since the start of the summer, and Ramsey added between 20 and 25 pounds after joining the program weighing 285 pounds.“If there’s a place you don’t want to play true freshman, it would be up front,” Hoke said, but both freshmen have mental toughness that he expects will help them in Iowa.“I think it’s a tribute to those guys [that they’re starting],” Hoke said. “It is rare. These two guys have both proven they have talent.” Gerberry will be under center taking snaps against Iowa. Hoke said Gerberry likes to be physical and believes his aggressive play in practice has rubbed off on the rest of the offensive line. There are several other new faces on the offense who will be expected to contribute from the beginning, Hoke said. The skill positions will rely on several freshmen to provide offensive firepower. In the backfield, true freshmen B.J. Hill and Chris Clancy are listed as second-string tailback and fullback, respectively. Charles Wynn will start the season at tailback and Larry Bostic is expected to contribute. Hill will also help with special teams returning punts and with kickoff returns. “B.J.’s a good running back,” Hoke said. “Larry gives us a lot of dimension in what we can do. All three [running backs] can catch the ball awful well out of the backfield. That’s something we want to be able to do more of.”The wide receiver position also has some new faces. Junior college transfer Brandon Hawkins will start against Iowa, along with Terry Moss. Bryan Williamson was originally slated to start at Iowa, but Hoke said Hawkins had a productive summer and fall camp. “When you recruit a junior college guy, you expect him to come in and contribute whether it’s first backup or a starter,” Hoke said.Dante Love — also a true freshman — is on the second string at wide receiver, and redshirt freshman Louis Johnson will back up Hawkins at the other end.
