FIELD HOCKEY Cards throw only two shots at IU

Ball State’s field hockey team managed just two shots in a 3-0 scrimmage loss to Indiana on Sunday.

Indiana registered 22 shots, including 17 shots on goal. Twelve of the Indiana shots came in the first of three 25-minute periods.

Lindsay Quay and Theran Teach were the only two Cardinals to record a shot. Teach had the lone shot on goal.

“Of course, we always want to have more shots than that,” coach Annette Payne said. “That’s just an end result of a couple things being changed.”

Indiana scored two goals in the first period and one goal in the second. Frederique Meeuwsen, Mallory Reabold and Katie Kiper all scored assisted goals.

BSU goalkeeper Jessie Malone recorded 11 saves while allowing just one goal in 50 minutes. Tracy Bannister allowed two goals and had three saves in 25 minutes.

Payne said she doesn’t yet know who will be the starter in the first game of the season on Saturday.

“I think they are both working hard,” she said. “There is no determining factor [in who will start].”

Despite being shutout, Payne said the scrimmage was beneficial to the players.

“I think that we did some good things,” she said. “Any time you walk onto the field, you want to be competitive. But at the same time, we also want to see some different things here and there.”

The Cards open the regular season on Saturday against William & Mary.
