County considers wireless Internet access

Omnicity, an Indianapolis-based broadband Internet company, has recently pitched its services to the Delaware County commissioners, but no decision has yet been made on whether or not the city will take the next step and accept the proposal.

The plan is to provide wireless broadband Internet access to the whole of Delaware County for between $29 and $49 a month.

According to Omnicity officials, the company is currently working with representatives of Jay and Wabash counties to help bring those communities online. Omnicity already provides wireless Internet access to 488,000 residential and business customers in the Indianapolis area.

Supporters for the plan include Ball Memorial Hospital, Ball State University and Muncie's Vision 2006 program. If county officials accept the plan, they will provide economic development income tax collateral for a loan of up to $1.3 million to install equipment on communication towers that would then beam Internet access to homes and businesses with wireless Internet receivers.
